A Day in Niseko

Welcome !

"A Day in NIseko" は、札幌国際大学 (SIU) の外国語教育センターが運営するニセコ地区紹介サイトです。しかしながら、ただの地域紹介サイトではありません。写真を利用して、日本人は英語を、そして外国人は日本語を学べるように、eラーニングコンテンツを用意しています。その内容は、シャドーイングと語彙練習です。シャドーイングとは、音声を聞きながらスクリプトを見ないで読む練習法で、通訳を目指す人は必ず行うトレーニングです。（説明文の翻訳は、札幌国際大学現代文化学科の学生が担当）

"A Day in Niseko" is a site to introduce the Niseko area run by the Language Center at Sapporo International University (SIU). However, it is not just a photo gallery. It provides sound scripts of both English and Japanese explaining the photos. They are useful for shadow training. Besides the sound scripts, it has vocabulary training contents. "A Day in Niseko" welcomes your photo contribution. All you need is  a photo related to the Niseko area with a caption. Please feel free to send us your best shots with caption in English or Japanese. We will translate it, and then make sound scripts and e-learning contents. Also if you have any comments on the photos, please send us your message through the comments section.

ニセコのバス停

この写真に見えるバス停はグランドヒラフスキー場に向かう入口にあります。左側に見えるのは待合所です。雪が降っている時や、風が強い時は助かります。紫色のバス停は「ナイト号」と呼ばれるバスの看板です。ナイト号は無料で利用できますが、地域パスポートという券が必要です。このバスは、グランドヒラフと倶知安町の繁華街を巡回しています。

These bus stops are located at the foot of Grand Hirafu Ski Area. On the left you can see a waiting section, which is very helpful when we have snow or a strong wind. The bus stop in purple is  for a bus called "Night Bus."  You can get on it free of charge if you get a local passport ticket. This bus runs between Grand Hirafu and downtown Kutchan.

Show Time

大雪が降った次の日は、ニセコ地区には除雪作業という大イベントがあります。この写真でその様子がわかります。雪を集める除雪車（黄色い車）。雪をトラックに移動するスノースローアー（緑の車）。そして雪を運ぶトラック。この３台のチームワークは非常に良いです。大量の雪が数分で消えてゆきます。

A day after we have a heavy snow, every road is busy in Niseko area. It is time to shovel snow. You can see what will happen from this photo. There is a big vehicle with a snow remover (yellow vehicle). The green vehicle is a snow thrower which picks up snow, throwing it into a truck. This truck will take the snow to a designated snow dumping area.  Their collaboration is superb. In a few minutes a large amount of snow will disappear  in front of your eyes.  Amazing show time!

羊蹄山が見える温泉

ニセコ地区には羊蹄山がみえる温泉施設がたくさんあります。この写真の温泉施設には露天風呂もあります。どこからでも羊蹄山を見ながら温泉を楽しむことができます。スキー場のすぐ横にあるので、冬は大変多くのスキー客が利用します。

Mountain View Hot Spring
There are a lot of hot spring facilities in the Niseko District where Mt. Youtei can be seen. you can enjoy a hot spring while seeing Mt. Youtei from almost anywhere. Quite a lot of skiers use it in winter because it is just beside the ski area.

ニセコ収穫祭

ニセコの秋は食材でいっぱいです。このポスターはそのような食材を使ったニセコ収穫祭に関するものです。メイン食材は「ジャガイモ」と「秋野菜」です。期間は９月５日から９月２７日です。メニューはコロッケバーガー、ポテトセット、なすの揚げもの、そして季節の野菜をふんだんに使ったカレーまでバラエティゆたかです。

Harvest Festival in Niseko
Niseko has many Autumn cooking ingredients. This poster concerns the Niseko Harvest Festival that uses such fresh ingredients. The main ingredients are potatoes and fall vegetables. The festival was held September 5th - September 27th. The menu ranges from croquette burgers, potato set, fried eggplant, to curry and rice with abundant seasonal vegetables.

バイクで一人旅

夏ニセコに来るとたくさんのライダーに出会います。彼らは北海道だけでなく本州からもやって来ます。北海道の魅力を尋ねると、1.まっすぐで広い道  2. おいしい料理  3. 空気がきれい  4. 自然がすばらしい。　これら全てを満たしてくれるニセコ地区はライダーにとって絶対見逃せないスポットになっています。

A Trip by Motorbike
Coming to Niseko in summer, we meet a lot of motorcycle riders. They come from not only Hokkaido but also the mainland. When they were asked about charm of Hokkido, the answers went as follows: 1. straight and wide roads  2. delicious foods  3. the pure and beautiful air  4. wonderful nature. The Niseko District, where these all can be found, is a spot that cannot be overlooked for the motorcycle riders.

温泉マーク

グランドヒラフスキー場横にあるこの２つの看板は、駐車場と温泉に関する案内板です。左側の看板に書かれている P はParkingを表してます。もちろん駐車場の意味です。右側の看板の一番上の部分にあるマークは温泉を示してます。Popoloは温泉施設の名前です。イタリア語で「人々」という意味です。

Hot-Spring Sign
These two signs are next to the Grand Hirafu Skiing Area. They are for a parking lot and a hot spring. The sign on the left of course means parking. The sign of the right side is for  a hot spring. The mark at the top is the symbol for a hot spring. Popolo is the name of a hot spring facility. It means people in Italian.

ニセコ産ズッキーニ

ニセコの「道の駅」には野菜の直売店があります。ニセコ地区の農家で育てられたいろいろな野菜がここに持ち込まれます。値段が安いのと新鮮なことで大変人気があります。この写真の野菜はズッキーニです。一見ズッキーニとは全く違う野菜に見えますが、食べ方は同じです。

Zucchini of Niseko
There is the shop of vegetables in Michi-no Eki, or the roadside station in Niseko. Various vegetables raised in the farm of the Niseko District are brought here. This place is very popular because of reasonable price and freshness. The vegetables in this photo are zucchinis. They look totally different from the common zucchini, but you can cook and eat them in the same way.

ニセコで発掘

倶知安町郊外では日本の後期旧石器時代の石器が出土しています。峠下遺跡とよばれるこの周りでは大学の発掘調査が現在でも行われています。発掘現場に立つと１万６千年以上前の時代にタイムスリップした気持ちになります。

Digging in Niseko
The stone implement of Japan From the Upper Paleolithic Era has been excavated in the Kutchan area. The excavation investigation by university students is still done in these surroundings called “Touge-sita Ruins.” Standing on the excavation site, we feel like we were in the age of 16,000 years ago.

ニセコ男爵イモ

じゃがいもには色々な種類があります。北海道産で有名な品種は、メークイン、インカのめざめ、きたあかり、そして男爵イモです。ニセコは男爵イモの産地として有名です。その理由はジャガイモが育つ環境にあります。羊蹄山の麓で豊かな水とジャガイモに適した土地があること。そして寒暖の差が大きいことにあります。９月下旬ごろから毎年収穫が始まります。

  Niseko Danshaku Imo
There are various kinds of potatoes. Famous kinds in Hokkaido are Meikuin, Inka-no-megumi, Kita-akari, Danshakuimo. Niseko is famous as the home of the Danshakuimo. The reason is the environment where the potato grows: the rich water at the foot of Mt. Youtei, productive land, and the great difference of temperature in a day. The potato harvest in Niseko starts about the end of September every year.

ニセコそば

ニセコはそばでも密かに有名です。車でニセコ地区をドライブしていると、よくご当地そばのお店を見かけます。この写真のそばも、そのような店にある人気メニューの一つです。「かき揚げ天そば」という名前で、色々な野菜を油で揚げたものがそばの上にのっています。料金は８６０円です。

Soba Noodle in Niseko
Niseko is secretly famous for Soba, or buckwheat noodles. Driving in Niseko, we often see local Soba shops. A bowl of Soba in this photo is one of the famous menu items at this restaurant. The name of this menu item is Kakiage Tensoba. As we can see, a variety of fried vegetables are on the Soba. The price is 860 yen.

パンプキンの道

秋になるとニセコのいろいろな場所でこの写真のようなパンプキンロードが登場します。この写真はグランドヒラフスキー場のリフトへ向かう途中で撮られました。向こうに見えるスキーリフトに乗ると10分ぐらいで一気に頂上まで登ることができます。

Pumpkin Road
When it comes to Autumn, pumpkins like in this picture appear in various places. The photo was taken on the way to the lift of Grand Hirafu Skiing Area. When we take a lift over there, it takes about 10 minutes to climb all the way to the top.

大盛りお好み焼き

倶知安の繁華街にはいろいろなおいしいお店があります。この写真の店では、オリジナルのお好み焼きが外国人観光客に大人気です。その理由は、外国人向けの大きなサイズ、目の前で作る楽しみを体験できる、そして日本的な味が楽しめることです。

Grand Okonomiyaki
There are a lot of good restaurants in downtown Kutchan. In this restaurant in the photo, original okonomiyaki is very popular with foreign tourists because it is a large serving, they can make it by themselves, and they can enjoy Japanese taste.

倶知安マンホール

このマンホールはグランドヒラフスキー場へ行く途中で見かけたものです。そこに書かれている内容から、倶知安とサンモリッツ市が１９６４年に姉妹都市提携を結んだことがわかります。海外姉妹都市提携は北海道では、札幌、旭川に次ぐ３番目のものでした。

Kutchan Manhole
You can see this manhole on your way to Grand Hirafu ski resort. It says that Kutchan has been the sister city of St. Moritz, Switzerland since 1964. Kutchan is the third city in Hokkaido along with Sapporo and Asahikawa to be a foreign sister city.

秋のニセコ道の駅

国道5号と道道66号の交差点に位置するニセコの「道の駅」は、毎日大勢の人でにぎわいます。農産物直売店ではニセコの高原野菜や果物、そして地元の食材を使った揚げイモやアイスクリーム等を買うことができます。また、観光案内所もあり、ニセコ地区の情報を得ることができます。

“Niseko Michi-no Eki” in fall
Niseko Michi-no Eki, or the Roadside Station of Niseko, is located at the intersection of national highway 5 and Hokkaido Highway 66. It is crowded with many people every day. We can buy the fried potato dish that uses the ingredients of the highland vegetables of Niseko, fruits, and local icecream in the direct sale of farm products shop.

大雪注意報

ニセコ地区は日本でも有数の豪雪地帯です。一晩で５０センチぐらいすぐに積もります。そのため多くの通りには融雪溝が道路脇にあります。雪が降った日の朝一番の仕事は、雪を集め、この融雪溝にその雪を落とすことです。水が流れているので、落ちた雪はすぐ解けます。

Warning for Heavy Snow
The Niseko region is one of Japan’s biggest snow areas. It sometimes snows 50 cm at night. That’s why there re snow-melting  gutters along many streets. After a night snowfall the first task in the morning is to remove the snow and dump it into those gutters. Water flows through the gutters thereby melting the snow quickly.
